Google goes fast with mod_pagespeed

4 11 2010
  • I’ve covered  the importance of loading speed before, I think the statistic is most people drop off if a page takes more than 7 seconds and obviously faster is better. That’s why it’s interesting that a Google representative has come out with an annoucement, “We just launched a new open-source Apache module called mod_pagespeed that any webmasters can use to quickly and automatically optimize their sites.  (It’s like Page Speed, but makes the changes automatically.)”  And the best part, “It can reduce page load times by up to 50%.
  • It seems Google has done another algorithm change recently, where on some searches they are ranking an internal page over the homepage. SEO book uses the keyword SEO as an example, but personally my results are still the same. The theory is that Google is finding the top sites and then doing internal searches on them for relevancy. Something to keep an eye out for.
  • comScore has released a 3-month report on the smartphone market, Android is up by 6.5%, Apple stayed even while Rim, Microsoft and Palm went backwards. Another win for Google.
